So, some big news today is that FIJI Water shut down operations in the military ruled Pacific nation, I would assume due to the 5,000 percent tax increase the government imposed on the mineral water. As a FIJI water fan I was saddened to hear this news today. The mineral water, which is extracted from an aquifier, is in my opinion, the best tasting water on the market. Poland Springs, a company bottling spring water in Maine is a close second and a more eco friendly choice because it’s a domestic product. The problem with Poland Sping is that they don’t supply much product to this region of the country and their water is only found in a few stores around Wilmington. Back to FIJI…lets talk about contributing factors to their carbon footprint. FIJI makes impressive eco friendly claims on their website(check it out), and if we were are just talking about the water itself I will have to agree. The problem is that Fiji is, well, 5,500 miles to LA which is it’s closest distribution point here in the US. 5,500 miles! The company uses 46 million gallons of fossil fuel and creates 216,000,000 lbs of green house gases per year! Having done minimal research today, I stumbled upon those jaw dropping numbers. The things we enjoy…it rarely dawns on us to research them. Now, I know some of you may be thinking about tap water as the most eco friendly choice out there, but the chlorine, flouride…everything has it’s downside I guess. The only way to get the facts and make an informed decision is to dig. So I encourage you all to think, dig a little and have a wonderful day.
The Cape Fear Green Girls tshirts are in and they look great! We will be contacting everyone that put in an order and will get the tshirts to you sometime this week. Thank you all!

Happy Earth Day everyone! I encourage you all to take this day to learn something new and set a goal for the coming year whether it be to use more environmentally friendly cleaning products, take a reusable coffee mug to your local coffee shop in the mornings, or sign up to become a member with such organizations as Cape Fear Green Building Alliance. I challenge everyone out there to make one life style change over the next year. Need help with ideas? Feel free to email Kate or Donna!

From 830pm to 930pm tonight, everyone is encouraged to turn off all electricity for one hour. The Duck and Dive and Calico Room have offered to observe, so if you are out tonight stop by and enjoy a drink in the candle light. You can check out the website, earthhour.org to learn more. If they can turn off the lights on the Vegas Strip for an hour, I think we can find it in ourselves to participate as well!
Wags for Wishes was a great sucess this past Saturday. Thank you to all of our local businesses that donated items for the raffle and silent auction and to the members of our community that supported the event. Thank you to Ron Ethridge and Fred Flynn for the time donated to play music, to the Duck and Dive for hosting a fundraiser and donating a percentage of their nights sales, and to all participating rescues. GCE is very excited to have been part of putting together an event for such a great cause. Check back for photos that will soon be in the photo gallery.
Earth Hour 2010 is organized by the WWF and is scheduled to take place on Saturday March 27th at 830PM. Participants are encouraged to turn off their lights for 1 hour in an effort to raise awarness about climate change and help move towards a more sustainable future. Lets see how many of us here in Wilmington we can get to participate. Right now there are 5,632,816 supporters globally. Go to their website, www.earthhour.org, to pledge your support. Encourage everyone you know to do the same. Then join us for an Earth Hour Candle Lit event on the 27th at 830 PM. Check back for more details and updates.

Article excerpted from Environmental News Network:
“When it comes to investing in sustainable business behaviors and programs, more than half of corporate marketers and communicators believe that their organizations will increase their involvement in environmental sustainability initiatives during the next two to three years, according to a survey conducted by the American Marketing Association and Fleishman-Hillard, Inc. In addition, half of those surveyed believe that economic realities will actually encourage the adoption of sustainability practices.
The survey shows that 58% of marketing and communication leaders believe their companies will place more emphasis on developing corporate sustainability opportunities in the months ahead, despite the belt tightening that is happening in the business world.
“At a time when the economy requires everyone to stay focused on the essentials, it’s noteworthy that businesses are putting sustainability programs into that must-do column,” said Nancy Costopulos, chief marketing officer of the American Marketing Association. “It is a signal that the business community is embracing environmental sustainability in a way that this country has probably never seen before.”
More than half of those surveyed believe that sustainability is an essential element of their company’s reputation right now. Nearly three-quarters believe that corporate reputation, corporate culture and technological advancements will be the drivers for sustainability. The new administration’s policies will further accelerate the adoption of corporate sustainability programs, according to 63% of responders in the survey.”
